4/27/10 at Citi Field

May 17th, 2010

So I waited Monday until the game was called a rain-out and they scheduled a doubleheader. Luckily Stubhub made a great service, emailed you and said how to get makeup tickets. They said we could use the tickets for Tuesday’s doubleheader so we decided to do that. Chris and Adam met me there later on, Adam made it in the 5th? – I want to say and Chris met us in the 7th.

It was a terribly cold and windy day, but still when Adam got there I made him go to the Shake Shack. We both bought shakes, and it was still worth it. It got so cold later on that I had a 3rd-4th? layer, putting my dodgers t-shirt over my Marist sweater to keep warm and stay in dodger ‘blue’.

Normally I try to avoid this series because, there are many old Dodger fans who come out to Ebbetts (err, I mean) Citi Field (face it, they’re practically the same on the outside) and come to the game. These games are also normally in the summer and they’re crowded and tough to get any number of balls.

So my plan was, since it was a doubleheader and I got there in the top of the 2nd inning (4:10 start, left work at 3:30), to go for 3rd out balls. I thought I was in luck early but balls scattered through the crowd, and I was also ready for any grounder to the third-base coach Larry Bowa (like how I got my FIRST game ball – 4/7/10 at Citi Field). However once I met up with Chris and Adam, I stopped until the 2nd game was about to start. When I saw warmups on the field, I snuck down again and missed out on Blake DeWitt and Jamey Carroll having a catch. Still determined I waited for 3rd out balls to start game two. At the end of the 2nd inning (I believe) Jamey Carroll caught an infield pop up to end it and came to the dugout. I staked out a good position, clear of anyone else, and Caroll underhanded the ball right to me – I made a clean one handed catch on it too.

Here are a few shots of the ball that I took when I got home, recovered from the cold, and all that.

The Hurt Locker

April 16th, 2010

Now the real movies are coming into my Netflix box…

thl_imdb

So I got The Hurt Locker and wow, what a film. Obviously deserving of the best picture of the year. This is a really compelling film and probably one of the best war films of our generation. There have been many many recent war films over the past decade and this film accomplishes something every other one failed to do, make it feel real.

It accomplishes everything it wants to really well, building tension and suspense, and even when it surprises you it works every time. I think the best quality of the film is its reality: sometimes you talk about films as an escape from reality but this film puts you into what feels like an accurate reality of the war in Iraq. I think that, among many other reasons, is probably why everyone raved about this film and why it is just amazing. Speaking of which, Jeremy Renner’s performance in the lead is a great performance and probably a career changing one.

I have now seen 6 of the 10 nominees for best picture and I’d probably rank them now as…

1. The Hurt Locker
2. Precious
3. Up
4. Up in the Air
5. A Serious Man
6. District 9

Frost/Nixon

April 15th, 2010

An interesting “mock” documentary/teleplay is Ron Howard’s film Frost/Nixon.

I think there are points where it makes sense to be a documentary but points where they want to be a real acting out play as well, that makes things difficult. Frank Langella does a great job but did not win in the tough best actor field from 2009. However, I did like this movie and it is a good, tough story about a man who is risking everything to get an interview with the President. I like how up front he is about the reasoning, money and ratings, and it turned into much more than that in their four interviews.

Look at the pictures from last years field, only 5, and there are four other strong pictures that would definately have been a tough go for many of the 10 that were nominated this year. I guess nominating 10 is a good thing but, it also devalues it… we know the academy recognized this film as top 5 for its year.

4/7/10 Citi Field

April 12th, 2010

My version here, but told better here. (Many thanks to Zack Hample for the photos!)

So this day was special for many reasons. First off, I got to see my good friend TJ who I don’t get to see often anymore. He’s busy teaching in the Bronx for now so he got out and got to Citi Field as fast as he could.

tj_ryan

So he met me around 5ish. Another fun fact about the day, my cellphone was on low battery from when I got to the park until it finally died at about 10:30.

So onto our day at the park, I got there and I of course saw good buddy Zack Hample getting geared up for the season. There I met a few of his friends and got to know Greg, Matt and Ben and we posed for a photo after collecting balls during BP. That can come after this first photo, Zack took of me and Matt getting ready for the first game of the season! I was excited probably from 3:30 on once I left work to get to the park and finally get the year underway. Yeah I’ve been watching baseball since like, well, have I really stopped watching specific plays and stuff at work? Well, only for a week for the NCAA Tournament did I actually stop watching baseball related stuff. Anyway, here’s Matt & I getting ready to enter… but of course

Citi Field had other plans. What sucks is, they only opened two turnstiles of self scan ticket windows. Two turnstiles, all game, that’s it for the Jackie Robinson Rotunda. So all, eight or so, lines sucked in to two ticket lines. Now, I don’t like this for the sole (and good) point I have: not everyone even scans their own groceries at Stop and Shop or wherever you go… so why let them scan their own tickets?!?! It’s a recipe for disaster. That coupled with the 38,000 about to come through wasn’t a good job.

After that, Zack raced up the stairs ahead of us… I lagged behind with my ankle (hurt playing basketball, in soft cast for another week – last week!). So once I realized that EVERYONE was in left field I did the only logical thing, worked center and right-center field.

Ball #1 was given to me by #58 Arroyo and I asked nicely a few times after he said he’d give me one when BP was close to ending… I waited some more and got one. Then, I believe, Angel Pagan tossed me my second ball of the day in center as well. After that, I moved over to right center where (TJ would meet me there) and I called out to “Fernando” Nieve. The security guard there kept telling me I had the wrong name, so once I got the ball I showed him my roster sheet and poked fun a little. I find it better to play nice with the security guards there and as long as you’re nice, use the word “sir” and “excuse me”, things will go well.

It was at this time I finally coached TJ up to get his own ball, he called out pitching coach Dan Warthen when a ball landed, and he tossed it right to him. Yay, I put pressure telling him that the last three times someone has come with me they got a ball too… but he came through and the streak is alive!

When Marlins BP started, I found a ball that was stranded in front of a very old man who helps the high class seats on the third base side, he wears green and said he couldn’t go on the field. I made nice with him and he asked a security guard if he could grab the ball lying there and toss it to me, he did and voila #4.

We went back to center and I got a ball from Dan Meyer in my Marlins gear. Then TJ and I made our move over to the right center again. TJ called out for Cody Ross to toss him a ball but Ross went for a kid instead.. The kid missed it so Ross said now he had to give it to a Marlin fan (his mistake as TJ had my 2nd Marlins hat on) and he got it. TJ immediately, before I could give him a ball from my backpack, went over and gave it to the kid. Then TJ called on Tim Wood and got a ball from him.

After BP we gathered around with Zack, TJ met him finally that day, and we went through our numbers and took a picture in Marlins gear. Zack has this photo up but he gave me this one too..

in order left to right: TJ (3), Me (6), Zack (15), Ben (1), Matt (3) and Greg (9)

Look at all those “throwback” teal hats! More on that later… So we settle into our nice seats in section 124 after going to the Shake Shack line, followed by a nice Shackburger, fries and shake (yay, Strawberry is there now!).

TJ and I made our sneak down after the 6th I believe and after that, the game did get real exciting. We were talking about all the crucial situations and I was saying how it could be possible to bring the closer in now in the jams in the 7th or 8th. By the way, here’s the WPA of the game by FanGraphs.

20100407_Marlins_Mets_0

So this was a real exciting game, TJ had to leave at 10 to get back to his apartment but I stayed and enjoyed the whole game. So after being heckled enough times for being a marlins fan by a few kids, I kept moving over til I found all these guys in a section near the Marlins dugout for the 9th inning.

So I got down there, sat between Greg and Ben hanging out. Didn’t know but Greg is at Manhattan, good ol’ MAAC school and told me how much everyone hates the head coach there and I gloated (if you can call it that) that Marist’s win over Manhattan was their only win this year. However the we talked about 3rd out balls and trying to go for one and then we both really said the same thing, we’re waiting for a ground ball to the third base coach and we should do well. So Greg had the aisle seat and I asked if one comes down, can I go for it.. so he said yes and I planned my little route. Figure that 3rd out balls in an extra inning game, might not be a smart idea so lets hope for a grounder…

Before you know it, Wes Helms 2-1 pitch is grounded to third base coach Joey Espada. So I make a run toward the first row on the dugout to be next to the crowd of many many teens. Of course I had a few advantages over them: one would be height, two a glove, three marlins gear. However I didn’t know his name so I turned back for a second to see Greg and, practically all of them (as I remember? memory not as good), saying “Joey!” to give me his name. So I yell as quick as I could get it and he tosses the ball up in the air for many hands and a glove to compete for. Let’s just say, I won that battle by stretching out real hard and being like a wide receiver: catching the ball at its highest point. Glove beats bare hands, who’da thunk it.

My first game ball, awesome.

Me
#1 Arroyo 58 (center)
#2 Pagan
#3 Nieve (right center -ish)
#4 ball rolled to track from security guard
#5 Dan Meyer (cener)
#6 Joey Espada game ball top 10th

TJ
#1 Dan Warthen (right center)
#2 Cody Ross (right center) … given to kid.
#3 Tim Wood (right center)

Precious

April 9th, 2010

Wow. This is a very interesting film. You can only watch it once though.

So once I exited Up in The Air, I thought wow Anna Kendrick really steals the show and Vera Farmiga is just as good. However, when you take a look at them, in the nominated for best supporting actress category, and Mo’Nique in Precious… it’s not even close. Mo’Nique gives an amazing performance as Precious’ mother in this really tough but really great film of 2009. After watching it, there’s absolutely no doubt that it should have been close for her to win.

Next is The Hurt Locker…

96 Team Tournament Winner? John Feinstein

April 5th, 2010

Wow, John Feinstein.

Q: Basically they’ll be out of school an entire week the second week?
Shaheen: Actually, if you were to look at the window for each individual team, you have to take each team and contemplate the fact right now you have half the field leaving campus on Tuesday, returning on Sunday or Monday.

Q: If they lose. I’m talking about the teams that win in advance. You’re going to advance 16 teams.
Shaheen: No, actually in the current model you have teams that depart on Tuesday, and even if they win, return on Sunday.

Q: We’re misunderstanding each other. Under the new model that you laid out, you play 64 teams Thursday/Friday. 32 advance to games Saturday/Sunday. Then you are down after those games to 32 teams.
Shaheen: Right.

Q: You’re saying you play games in the round of 32 Tuesday/Wednesday. They would then advance to regionals when?
Shaheen: They would continue into the regional as it’s normally scheduled now.

Q: So they would go Tuesday to Thursday, Wednesday to Friday?
Shaheen: Right.

Q: So they miss an entire week of school. That’s what I’m trying to get.
Shaheen: If you listened to my original answer, they leave now on Tuesday.

Q: I’m talking about the second week, not the first week. They play a game Saturday/Sunday, play a game Tuesday or Wednesday, then go directly to the regional. Tell me when in that second week they’re going to be in class.
Shaheen: The entire first week, the majority of the teams would be in class.

Q: You’re just not going to answer the question about the second week. You’re going to keep referring back to the first week, right? They’re going to miss the entire second week under this model.
Shaheen: So they’re going to go to school the first week, and then they’re –

Q: They’re going to be under the same schedule you said basically the first week, and then they’ll miss the entire second week.
Shaheen: I’m clearly missing the nuance of your point.

Q: You and I miss nuances a lot. Thank you.
BOB WILLIAMS: Next question, please.
